General Data Protection Regulation

The GDPR replaced the Data Protection Act as of 25^th May 2018.

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is designed to strengthen and unify online privacy rights and data protection for individuals within the European Union while streamlining the data protection obligations of businesses serving EU citizens through a single Regulation instead of 28 different National laws.

The Regulation requires organisations of all sizes to adopt a new set of processes and policies aimed at giving Individuals greater control over their personal records. Much of this will involve writing new processes and manuals, retraining staff and updating systems to accommodate these new procedures. Other steps involve practical measures, such as employing encryption where data is exposed to risk.

In addition to giving individuals more control over their data and protecting it against accidental loss, the GDPR also states that any data breaches must be reported within 24 hours, not only to the national authority but also to the affected individuals so that users can take appropriate measures.

What you can do as a business to comply with GDPR

Above all else, the security of the data you keep is key. Employ strong encryption practices on any devices exposed to any data belonging to individuals, and have practices in place to keep this data safe. A comprehensive security solution including anti-virus and anti-malware protection on endpoints, encryption policies in place not only on hard-drives but also on any removable media, and an up-to-date firewall or unified threat management solution should be employed to prevent unauthorised access to personal data.
